Government of Yukon expands pediatric specialty clinics to reduce travel burden and improve access to care

The Government of Yukon is expanding pediatric outreach clinics to include new specialties and additional clinic days. This will improve access to high-quality care for children and families across the territory and reduce the need for medical travel outside the territory.

The number of pediatric sub-specialty outreach clinic days in the Yukon is expected to increase from 10 to 20 during the 2025 to 2026 fiscal year. These clinics will take place throughout the fiscal year, with specific dates and times to be confirmed by BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH). Visiting specialists from BCCH will provide care in cardiology and diabetes, along with new services in dermatology and neurology. These clinics are delivered in partnership with Lynx Health Clinic, which provides the clinic space and local coordination in the Yukon.

This expansion is expected to benefit approximately 70 more children and their families, who will be able to receive specialized care in the Yukon rather than travelling out of territory to access this care. With this addition, the total number of children expected to receive care through the pediatric outreach clinics this year rises to approximately 170. Since most children are accompanied by a parent or caregiver, this means hundreds of Yukoners will avoid medical travel, easing the financial, emotional and logistical burden on families.

This is great news for Yukon families. Medical travel can place unnecessary emotional, financial and logistical stress on parents and children during an already stressful and uncertain time. By offering more specialized pediatric care at home in the Yukon, we aim to reduce this stress, improve access and reduce costs to help ensure children can get the care they need, closer to home.

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee

We are proud to support the delivery of expanded pediatric outreach clinics by providing space and coordination support at the Lynx Health Clinic. Expanding access to sub-specialty care here in the Yukon helps ensure that more children can receive timely, high-quality care in a setting that is familiar and close to home. This kind of collaboration makes a real difference for families across the territory.
