Government of Yukon invests $1.4 million to support mineral exploration in 2023-24

The Government of Yukon is investing $1.4 million to support 44 mineral exploration projects through the Yukon Mineral Exploration Program in 2023-24. These projects are anticipated to spend more than $4.6 million on exploration this season.

The Yukon Mineral Exploration Program supports placer and hard rock exploration projects by reimbursing a percentage of approved exploration expenditures. The intent of the program is to support early-stage projects and stimulate new mineral discoveries.

The Yukon Geological Survey, which administers the program, received 57 applications for 2023 funding: 33 from hard rock proponents and 24 from placer operators. Of those, it approved 28 hard rock and 16 placer projects.

The Yukon Mineral Exploration Program is an important way that our government supports the mining industry by stimulating new discoveries. This year’s $1.4 million investment is expected to leverage more than twice as much in private-sector spending in the territory. This program has previously supported the advancement of important discoveries such as the White Gold district. We look forward to the coming field season.

Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources John Streicker

Quick facts
  • The Yukon Mineral Exploration Program assesses applications based on various factors. The technical reports from exploration activities help advance knowledge of the Yukon's geology for better resource management decisions.

  • Applicants must ensure that all permits, licences, notifications and other authorizations are in place before exploration work proceeds, and that all work undertaken complies with existing laws and regulations.

  • The Yukon government invested $1.2 million in the Yukon Mineral Exploration Program in 2022-23.
