Over the next two years, a research fellow will be joining the Government of Yukon to work on a project on food security and climate change. The project received grant funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Health System Impact Fellowship program.
Dr. Iva Seto will be joining Health and Social Services staff to lead the project. The project is expected to help better understand the relationship between climate change and food security. It will also help the Government of Yukon develop indicators that measure food security in the Yukon, meeting one of the commitments in Our Clean Future.
Over the span of the project, the research team will be reviewing available literature, traditional knowledge and engage with participants that reflect a wide range of Yukoners, including Yukon First Nations governments, to learn about their experiences with food security.
Climate change and food security are issues that hit close to home for Yukoners. We are excited to be supporting the important work of Dr. Seto and look forward to the results of the research project. Innovative projects like this help us build resilience in our communities while ensuring we meet our commitments in addressing climate change and food security in the territory.

Health System Impact Fellow Dr. Iva Seto
The Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Health System Impact Fellowship program is a competitive grant program that provides scholars the opportunity to work directly within the Yukon’s health systems.
Dr. Seto was motivated to apply her expertise to the Yukon’s climate challenges after reading two government reports published last fall: Our Clean Future, outlining action on addressing climate change; and Putting People First, a comprehensive review of public health and social services.
Through the fellowship, Dr. Seto will be working with the Government of Yukon, Yukon University and the University of Toronto.
