The Government of Yukon urges Yukoners to test their smoke alarms

Saved By The Beep

The Yukon is joining jurisdictions across Canada to mark the territory’s first Test Your Smoke Alarm Day.

As part of Test Your Smoke Alarm Day, all Yukoners are encouraged to learn more about smoke alarms, fire safety and home fire escape planning. Learning about fire safety can save lives.

Most importantly, Yukoners are asked to test their smoke alarms today. Test your alarms once a month using the test button, change batteries once a year and replace smoke alarms every 10 years. In the Yukon, it is the law to have smoke alarms installed in your home. Smoke alarms should be installed outside every bedroom and on every level of your home.

Visit www.savedbythebeep.ca or your local fire department to find free resources about smoke alarms and fire safety.

Today is the first annual Test Your Smoke Alarm Day. The Yukon is proud to join jurisdictions across Canada working together to improve home fire safety. If you haven’t already, make sure you install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas and on every level of the home, including the basement. Today is a great reminder to test your smoke alarms once a month – start today! Taking simple safety steps in your home could mean the difference between life and death.
