Joint Statement from Minister responsible for French Language Services Directorate John Streicker and Minister responsible for Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean on funding to strengthen Les Essentielles

Minister responsible for French Language Services Directorate John Streicker and Minister responsible for Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean have issued the following statement:

“Today, the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon announced joint funding to allow Les Essentielles to buy the building that houses their organization. This project is a unique opportunity to help strengthen Les Essentielles and the Yukon Francophone community, helping ensure they thrive for generations to come.

“Les Essentielles has provided invaluable community-based services to French-speaking women and their families for almost 30 years. The organization is well-known for offering respite services for families and initiatives to raise awareness about gender-based violence as well as various artistic and cultural activities.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to the Government of Canada for providing over $2.4 million to allow Les Essentielles to purchase a commercial property in Whitehorse. We are all truly thankful for the development of the Official-Language Communities Program, the Community Spaces Fund and Canada’s continued investments in the Yukon.

“The Government of Yukon’s contribution of $300,000 reflects our commitment to support organizations working to ensure gender equity and the vitality of our growing Yukon Francophone community.”
