The Government of Yukon is continuing to support the recovery process in the Klondike Valley and the Klondike area after the severe spring flooding of 2023.
The Klondike Flood Recovery Funding program, with financial support for housing, small businesses and agriculture, closed on October 3, 2023. Over 30 applications were submitted, with more than $1.5 million in claims.
With the wildfire and flood response season now over, the Emergency Measures Organization continues working on the recovery phase of this flood event. As part of this work, Stantec has been contracted to conduct an After Action Review. The review will provide flood-affected residents the opportunity to share their experiences and feedback with the Yukon government to help improve future flood responses.
An online survey for residents impacted by the flood will be available until February 16, 2024.

Additionally, this winter, the Government of Yukon will work with local governments and residents of Dawson City and the Klondike Valley on emergency management planning for their area.
Flooding in the Klondike Valley earlier this year deeply affected Yukoners’ homes, businesses and livelihoods. Through the recovery funding program and its different streams, we’ve been able to deliver targeted help to those who need it. We will continue to support the community as they recover. I would like to express my gratitude to all volunteers, emergency personnel and the recovery team who are supporting residents affected by the Klondike River Flood. I look forward to the insights that will come out of the After Action Review, helping enable us to improve our planning for the future.

Last spring, residents of the Klondike Valley were severely impacted by Klondike River flooding. From response to recovery funding, our government has supported those affected over the past several months. We remain committed to supporting Klondike Valley residents with the ongoing recovery process and working with Yukon communities to increase their resilience to climate-related disasters.

Klondike area farmers and agriculture producers were among the hardest hit by the May 2023 flooding. Our government remains committed to supporting their recovery, including through initiatives like the Klondike Flood Recovery Fund. I encourage farmers and producers to participate in the After Action Review process and tell us how we can improve future support to our valued agriculture industry.

Since the launch of the recovery funding program, Yukon Housing Corporation’s Dawson office has been open to receive applications and assist residents. Yukon government officials were in Dawson July 3 to 5 and Sept 17 to 20 to speak to affected residents and to support applicants.
The Department of Energy, Mines and Resources received five applications under the program’s Agriculture stream with an estimated total of $750,000 in claims.
The Department of Economic Development received five applications under the Small Business stream.
Yukon Housing Corporation will be supporting at least 22 households with claims totalling more than $700,000 in recovery funding.
