The Women’s Directorate will now be known as the Women and Gender Equity Directorate to reflect the important work that is already happening to advocate and support women, girls and the LGBTQ2S+ community.
The Directorate remains committed to supporting and advocating for women and girls, working towards the elimination of gender-based violence and supporting the government’s efforts to integrate a gender and diversity lens on all decision making. They have now expanded their formal mandate for gender equity that includes sexual orientation. The new name and formal mandate also aligns with the understanding that gender is on a spectrum.
Ensuring that our work reflects gender inclusivity and supports LGBTQ2S+ Yukoners is a key commitment for our government. Although the Directorate’s name has changed and their mandate has expanded, our commitments to advancing gender equity and inclusion for women, girls and the LGBTQ2S+ community is unwavering. We have made great progress as a society and as a government and I am proud of the work we are doing to make the Yukon a place where everyone is celebrated.

This update was a key commitment in the 2021 LGBTQ2S+ Inclusion Action Plan made by the Government of Yukon in an effort to better reflect the work being done that is gender inclusive and in support of LGBTQ2S+ Yukoners.
The name and formal mandate change was announced in Minister McLean’s July 5, 2021, mandate letter and formalized by two Orders in Council, signed on September 16, 2021.
September 19 to 25, 2021, marks Gender Equality Week in Canada, a chance to celebrate achievements and raise awareness of the work ahead to address persistent outcome gaps between men, women, and gender-diverse people in the Yukon.
