School staffing updates ahead of the 2023–24 school year

The Government of Yukon has made significant progress in the recruitment of education professionals in advance of the 2023–24 school year. The Yukon government works in partnership with Yukon First Nations and school boards to staff Yukon schools. Where there are educator vacancies, schools – with support from their leadership teams – follow established strategies to ensure students' learning needs are met.

By starting intensive recruitment efforts in February 2023, the Yukon government and school boards have already filled over 207 education professional positions. The goal for all recruitment is to find staff with the best combination of qualifications, experience and suitability to ensure students have the best educational experience possible.

As of August 9, 2023, there are 40 postings actively under recruitment. These postings are available on the national job board at applytoeducation.com and include:

  • one vice-principal;
  • three Yukon First Nations language teachers;
  • four principals, including one for the future Whistle Bend Elementary School;
  • seven learning assistance teachers; and
  • 25 teachers.

Further recruitment is ongoing for additional resources to support student success, including additional learning assistance teachers, educational assistants and school wellness counsellors. Ten educational assistant postings have just moved to the next phase of recruitment.

By joining the Yukon's education system, educators have the opportunity to live and teach in the unparalleled beauty of Canada's northwest while receiving the necessary support to deliver high-quality and culturally appropriate education to students.

I am thrilled to share that the initiatives undertaken by our government to recruit education professionals are already making a difference. The profession of teaching and supporting the next generation of Yukoners is truly fulfilling, and I urge individuals residing in the territory as well as across Canada to consider the field when contemplating new opportunities or the next phase in their careers.

 Minister of Education Jeanie McLean
