Statement from Minister of Education on the Yukon RCMP’s conclusion of the investigation at Jack Hulland Elementary School

Minister of Education Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:

“Yesterday, the Yukon RCMP issued a news release and shared a letter with the Jack Hulland Elementary School community as their final update on the investigation into allegations related to the historic use of holds and isolation spaces at Jack Hulland Elementary School.

“While the RCMP’s investigation represents the closure of the police investigation, I acknowledge that people in the Jack Hulland Elementary School community may be experiencing a variety of emotions about the RCMP’s decision. Many may still not have the answers they are seeking while others are pleased with the way the investigation has concluded. All of these feelings are valid. Regardless, please know that we are committed to the wellbeing, safety and protection of students when they are in our care.

“I recognize the significance of this information and know it will impact the school community and Yukoners in different ways. If you need support processing or knowing where to go next, there are free and confidential supports for you and your family. If you’re not ready now, the supports will be available when you are. More information about supporting the wellbeing of students in school can be found at

“Over the past two and a half years, the government has actively worked to enhance accountability and oversight in Yukon schools to ensure students’ safety. This work continues as our priority for the Yukon education system.

“I expect that all three school authorities – Yukon Education, First Nation School Board and Commission scolarie francophone du Yukon – as well as teachers and all school staff foster a safe and inclusive learning environment that nurtures the academic and personal growth of students. The Department of Education is working with all three school authorities to support school staff in following through on this commitment to students and families.

“Thank you to everyone who makes up the school community and education system here in the Yukon. Your trust and support are invaluable as we work together to create a foundation for lifelong success and well-rounded development for all children.”
