Statement from Minister of Health and Social Services and Minister of Justice on International Drug Users Remembrance Day

Minister of Health and Social Services and Minister of Justice Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

“Today is International Drug Users Remembrance Day, an opportunity to honour the memory of those whose lives were cut short due to substance use and the associated societal stigma.

“Behind the statistics of drug-related fatalities, we must remember that these are human lives. These individuals were mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends and neighbours. Substance use has no boundaries and affects us all.

“Our government remains committed to addressing this complex issue. Our goal is to create an environment where individuals feel safe to seek necessary resources and support, regardless of the current stage of their relationship with substances. This involves initiatives such as Car 867, expanding safer supply options, and working with partners to increase access to naloxone and fentanyl testing kits in all Yukon communities.

“We will continue to work on expanding access to treatment and recovery services, implementing harm reduction strategies, raising public education and awareness about the dangers of substance use and enhancing community safety and wellbeing. These areas of focus will form the foundation of the Substance Use Health Emergency Strategy, which is currently being finalized. This strategy aims to bolster our efforts to support individuals and communities affected by substance use.

"On International Drug Users Remembrance Day, we also honour the efforts of advocates and allies who have tirelessly championed the health and human rights of individuals using drugs. The strides made in the wider public health response to illicit drug use, through initiatives like harm reduction and supervised consumption sites, stand as a testament to their resilience and commitment.

“As we pause to remember those we have lost, let us also remember their loved ones who remain as well as our shared responsibility to those who are still with us, and who continue to live with substance use.

“This day, established by the International Network of People who Use Drugs (INPUD), also serves as an important reminder of the ongoing Substance Use Health Emergency, particularly as it relates to the toxic drug supply that continues to impact the health, safety and wellbeing of Yukoners.

“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I extend my deepest condolences to everyone who has been affected by substance use. Your loss is our loss. Together, we remain committed to ending the stigmatisation and criminalisation of people who use drugs and building a safer, more compassionate society.

“I urge all Yukoners to join us in this mission. Together, we can make a significant impact in the battle against the adverse impact of substance use."
