Statement from Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee on the Yukon Coroner's news release on toxic illicit drugs

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

"The recent news release from Yukon’s Chief Coroner, highlighting the continuing tragedy of lives lost to toxic illicit drugs in our community, is a stark reminder of the persistent challenge we continue to face. The data revealing the impact of substance use, particularly opioids, in our territory is deeply troubling. These are not just statistics; they represent our community members, friends, and family – their loss is felt by us all.

"Our government is committed to continuing to tackle the Substance Use Health Emergency with urgency and compassion. We understand the complex nature of addiction and the devastating effects of a poison drug supply. It is imperative that we work together to provide effective support and solutions.

"I urge Yukoners to be vigilant and exercise extreme caution in the face of this inconsistent and poisonous drug supply. Please consider using drug checking services offered by Blood Ties Four Directions, the Outreach Van and Emergency Medical Services. Please do not use alone. Communicating with friends about substance use and having a plan for emergencies, including naloxone, are crucial steps to help ensure safety.

"In response to this emergency, our government continues to expand and provide a range of services:

  • Mental Wellness and Substance Use Services: accessible at 1-866-456-3838, offering counseling and support to anyone in need.
  • Opioid Treatment Services are available by calling 867-668-2552 for same-day appointments and at various locations including the Referred Care Clinic and 405 Alexander. These services include safer supply options and are a vital resource for those seeking help.
  • Naloxone Kits: we encourage all Yukoners and business owners to obtain these life-saving kits. Information on how to get a naloxone kit can be found at Yukon.ca.

"Our government remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing this emergency through a comprehensive approach that includes prevention, harm reduction, treatment and support for recovery, and community safety and wellbeing. We continue to work with community partners, health care providers and those with lived experience to find sustainable solutions.

"It is more important than ever to show kindness and compassion towards those who are struggling with substance use and to support those who are grieving. The loss of even one life to substance use is one too many, and it is a collective responsibility to work towards a healthier and safer Yukon.

"Our thoughts are with the families and communities affected by these tragedies. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those mourning the loss of loved ones. Your pain is shared by our entire community, and we are committed to supporting you through these challenging times."
