Statement from Minister Jeanie McLean on Girl Guides’ World Thinking Day

Minister of Education and Minister of Women and Gender Equity Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:

“Since 1926, February 22 has been designated as World Thinking Day, a day devoted to celebrating Girl Guides and their efforts to empower girls in the Yukon, across Canada and around the world.

“The Girl Guides of Canada offers local programs in the Yukon to develop girls’ confidence, build their skills and help them become passionate young leaders. Girls and young people enjoy weekly meetings to connect with friends, learn about the outdoors at destinations like the Girl Guide campsite at M’Clintock Bay on Marsh Lake, meet inspiring role models and give back to their communities through service projects and fundraising with their beloved Girl Guide cookies.

“Throughout Canada, Girl Guides are encouraged to commemorate World Thinking Day by celebrating the sisterhood of guiding in their local communities and shining a “Guiding light”. In a show of solidarity, many landmarks, bridges, buildings and homes will glow in the distinctive Girl Guide blue on the evening of February 22. Here in the Yukon, we have lit the Jim Smith Building in Girl Guide blue in their honour.

“Let us join the Girl Guides in celebrating World Thinking Day, providing our thanks to the many Yukoners who volunteer as dedicated Girl Guide leaders and encouraging the next generation of Yukon leaders who are being empowered through Girl Guide programs.”
