Statement from Minister Jeanie McLean on the unofficial results of the Yukon First Nation School Board referendum

Minister of Education Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:

“Last night marked a historic moment in the Yukon, as we received the preliminary results of the referendum on the First Nation School Board. These results show that seven school communities have voted yes to have their schools operated by the new Yukon First Nation School Board. The official results of the referendum process will be announced on January 31 and we will have more information to share at that time.

“This is a major step in the right direction as we move forward in advancing the path to reconciliation. A path that was started 49 years ago with the historic document Together Today for our Children Tomorrow. The establishment of a Yukon First Nation School Board will contribute to and improve the educational outcomes for all students across the territory.

“I want to thank the Chiefs Committee on Education, the Yukon First Nation Education Directorate, the Department of Education and Elections Yukon for the key parts they have played in this tremendous effort. Through working closely with our partners, we will continue to advocate for change for the betterment of all students. We will make sure that all students have the opportunities to learn about Yukon First Nations histories, culture and languages as they are such an integral part of our lives.

“As Yukoners, we should be proud of the milestone we have achieved today. This is a momentous occasion and I congratulate all schools that will be joining the new First Nation School Board. We remain committed to working collaboratively over the days and months ahead as the school board is established and these schools make the successful transition.”
