Minister of Education Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:
“I thank the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate Office for their dedicated work in reviewing critical aspects of our education system, as outlined in the reports tabled today in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.
“We acknowledge the findings of systemic racism in education, the gaps in our supports for children with complex needs and the past practices identified at Jack Hulland Elementary School. Each report underscores the need for ongoing action to improve our education system.
“Our government accepts the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate’s recommendations in principle and has already been hard at work to take meaningful steps to address these issues.
- Addressing systemic racism: We have been working to further deepen partnerships with Yukon First Nations and implement cultural competency training for educators. Our work to renew the Joint Education Action Plan, along with our upcoming learner outcome strategy and the work supporting the Reimagining Inclusive and Special Education plan, will continue to carry this important work forward.
- Supporting children with complex needs: Actions underway include re-establishing a multi-departmental committee, developing Yukon-based therapeutic programs and enhancing training for educators.
- Ensuring student safety at schools across the territory: We continue to implement clear, updated policies against the misuse of holds, restraints and isolation, supported by comprehensive staff training and increased student supports.
“Our government is committed to creating safer, more inclusive schools that support every student's learning and wellbeing. The Department of Education will continue to work closely with the Yukon Child and Youth Advocate Office, families, educators and Yukon First Nations to ensure meaningful progress and accountability.
“Together, we will continue to build an education system that truly reflects our shared values and commitments."
