Statement from Minister McPhee on Green Shirt Day

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

"April 7 is Green Shirt Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about organ donation and honouring the legacy of Logan Boulet. We remember the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in 2018 and how Logan’s decision to become an organ donor saved six lives and inspired more than 150,000 Canadians to register almost immediately as donors. His selfless act continues to encourage people across the country to consider the life-saving impact of organ donation.

"Organ donation is a powerful way to give others a second chance at life. In the Yukon, we recognize the importance of this decision and encourage Yukoners who may be interested in organ donation to register as an organ donor and have conversations with their families about their wishes.

"In the Yukon, becoming an organ donor is a simple process that involves filling out an organ donor registration form, which can be downloaded online or obtained in person at the Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan office. Once completed, the form can be submitted by mail or dropped off at the office located on the fourth floor of the Financial Plaza building at 204 Lambert Street in Whitehorse. Donors will receive a small heart symbol on their health care cards indicating their donor status. Importantly, individuals can change their minds at any time and cancel their registration if they choose to do so.

"Every year, thousands of Canadians await life-saving transplants and the need for organ donors remains high. Through education and awareness, we can increase the number of registered donors and offer hope to those on transplant waiting lists.

"I encourage all Yukoners to take a moment today to learn more about organ donation and consider registering their intent to donate. Having open conversations with your family and loved ones about your wishes can make all the difference. Together, we can honour Logan Boulet’s legacy and continue to save lives through the gift of organ donation."
