Statement from Minister McPhee on International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day and Month

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee issued the following statement:

“September is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Month and September 9 marks FASD Awareness Day. FASD Awareness Day is held on the ninth day of the ninth month to emphasize the importance of going alcohol-free for the full nine months of pregnancy.

“This year’s FASD Awareness theme, Everyone Plays a Part: Take Action!, is a powerful reminder that we all have a role in supporting healthy pregnancies and individuals living with FASD. This month reminds us that FASD is not just an individual issue and by working together, we can better understand FASD and support those living with it.

“FASD is a lifelong disorder impacting the brain and body of people exposed to alcohol before birth. It can lead to challenges with physical health, learning, attention, communication and social skills. FASD impacts approximately four per cent of Canadians, yet it remains widely misunderstood. Drinking any amount of alcohol while pregnant can be harmful. This is why it is important that we support alcohol-free pregnancies and encourage discussions around alcohol risk during pregnancy.

“Today, I want to recognize the important work being done to raise awareness of FASD across the Yukon and Canada. Our government remains committed to supporting Yukoners with FASD in living healthy, fulfilling lives. Through our partnership with the Canada Northwest FASD Partnership and the Canada FASD Research Network, we continue to advance evidence-based research and policy to improve prevention, assessment and support for those living with FASD.

“We will continue to work alongside the FASD Interagency Advisory Committee and dedicated community health partners to prevent FASD and ensure that our initiatives are accessible and responsive to the needs of all Yukoners.

“Throughout September, I encourage everyone to learn more about FASD and engage in conversations that promote awareness and prevention. Today, look out for the Jim Smith Building sign at 2071-2nd Avenue in Whitehorse which is lit up in red in support of FASD Awareness Day. Join the FASD Awareness barbecue on Tuesday, September 9 from 11:30 am to 2 pm at Shipyards Park. This community event is open to all with free food and entertainment and is a great opportunity to show your support.”
