Statement from Minister Pillai on the 2022 Arctic Arts Summit

Minister of Tourism and Culture Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

"As the 2022 Arctic Arts Summit held in Whitehorse comes to a close, I would like to recognize and celebrate the success of this incredible international event.

“Our goal with the Arctic Arts Summit was to advance the knowledge, stories and cultures of the Northern and Indigenous nations and Arctic countries of the Circumpolar Region. The past week surpassed our high expectations in every possible way.

“I wish to thank my colleagues at the Canada Council for the Arts for their commitment and support throughout the planning and successful co-hosting of the Summit. This meaningful partnership gives me great hope for the future of arts and culture in the Canadian North, as we work together to increase capacity, support outreach and engagement and deliver new and more equitable access to funding for artists.

“To our presenting partners, the Yukon Arts Centre, the Yukon First Nations Culture and Tourism Association and to our numerous community partners: thank you for opening your venues and offering your skills and expertise to ensure this event’s success.

“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, our sincere gratitude to everyone who played a part in bringing to life this monumental event. I know that I join Yukoners and Nordic leaders in leaving this event with newfound knowledge, perspectives and a renewed purpose for what we can and will accomplish together.

“I have learned many ways to say thank you over this past week, so to each and every Arctic Arts Summit contributor: thank you, merci, gùnáłchîsh, mähsi'cho, shä̀w níthän, nakumek, quyana, baasee', qujanaq, giitu, takk, and kiitos.”
