Statement from Minister Streicker on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day

Minister responsible for French Language Services Directorate John Streicker has issued the following statement:

“On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I invite everyone to join in celebrating Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day – a proud and joyful expression of Francophone identity.

“This day is an occasion to honour the vibrant Francophone culture and heritage that enriches communities across the country – including right here in the Yukon. The population of the Yukon is the third most bilingual in Canada after Quebec and New Brunswick with more than 14 per cent of Yukoners speaking French, according to the 2021 Census of Population, and this number is on the rise.

“French-speaking Yukoners play an essential role in shaping our territory. Through their language, traditions and contributions, they help make the Yukon a more diverse, dynamic and inclusive place to live.

“Each year, Solstice Saint-Jean, organized by the Association franco-yukonnaise, offers a great opportunity to come together and celebrate Francophone culture. Thank you to the organizations, artists, volunteers and everyone who helps bring the Francophonie to life on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day and all year long. Whether through music, food or simply coming together, your contributions help keep the Yukon Francophonie strong and vibrant.

“Bonne Saint-Jean-Baptiste!”
