Statement from Minister Tracy-Anne McPhee on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee has issued the following statement:

“Tomorrow is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, an opportunity for communities around the world to champion Elder abuse prevention. This year’s theme, ‘Rights Do Not Get Old’, emphasizes that we all have a role to play in protecting the rights of seniors and Elders.

“Abuse and neglect can happen to any adult regardless of their age, but seniors are more likely to experience physical, emotional or financial mistreatment. The United Nations estimates that one in six adults over the age of 60 experience neglect or abuse.

“By working together, we can learn to recognize the signs of Elder abuse and neglect, ways to address it and increase awareness of what resources are available to help. If you are concerned about a friend, neighbour, community member or loved one who may be experiencing abuse or neglect, help is available.

“When adults are being abused or neglected, it can be difficult to know if or when to step in. Adult Protection Services provides the most effective but least intrusive form of support, assistance or protection for adults who may be unable to seek help on their own.

“Thank you to all Yukoners who support seniors and Elders and provide programs and services to help seniors stay safe, healthy, active and engaged and for your contributions to the health and wellness of our communities.
