Statement from Premier Pillai on the anniversary of D-Day

Premier Pillai has issued the following statement:

“This year marks 81 years since Allied forces launched the historic D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy – a pivotal moment in the Second World War that changed the course of history.

“Among the soldiers were over 14,000 brave Canadians, supported by 110 Royal Canadian Navy ships and 15 squadrons from the Royal Canadian Air Force. They joined over 140,000 Allied troops and nearly 200,000 naval personnel in one of the largest military operations the world has ever seen.

“In the early hours of June 6, 1944, the skies and seas around Normandy erupted as the operation began. Paratroopers descended behind enemy lines, and thousands of soldiers boarded landing craft, braving rough waters and fortified defences to reach the shore.

“At 6:30 am, the first waves landed under relentless enemy fire. Despite heavy casualties, Canadian forces advanced with extraordinary courage and resolve. By 8:00 am, they had secured a foothold and continued to push inland – clearing houses, securing streets and overcoming fierce resistance.

“By nightfall, Canadian troops had achieved their objectives and advanced up to 16 kilometres into enemy-held territory. The cost was high: at least 359 Canadians lost their lives, 584 were wounded and 131 taken prisoner.

“Today, we remember and honour the extraordinary bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in the D-Day landings. Their actions on that fateful day marked a turning point in the war and set the stage for the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation.

“Last year I had the honour of attending the 80th anniversary of D-Day in France where I met with Veterans and learned firsthand the courage and resilience of those who fought for Canada’s freedom.

"This D-Day, I encourage all Yukoners to take a moment to honour the courage, sacrifice, and determination of these Canadians – a legacy that will never be forgotten."
