Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement after delivering remarks at the Canadian Institute for Arctic Security Conference:
“On March 27, the Canadian Institute for Arctic Security (CIAS) hosted its first conference – Conference Zero. With support from the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon and based on a recommendation from the Yukon Arctic Security Advisory Council, the CIAS is taking important steps to build knowledge and expertise on Arctic security in the Canadian North.
“Arctic security has long been a priority for northerners. However, with climate change opening Arctic waterways, rising geopolitical tensions and the demand for critical minerals at an all-time high, greater attention to northern defence and security is required. These conversations cannot – and should not – take place without leadership and expertise from northerners. This is something that all three northern Premiers have been strongly advocating for at every opportunity, during every meeting with federal and provincial officials and through the Northern Premiers' Forum.
“The CIAS ensures northern voices will lead these critical conversations. It will provide evidence-based analysis, policy recommendations and a platform for meaningful engagement on Arctic security. Over the past months, the institute has been working diligently to gather research and strengthen connections that will benefit northerners. I look forward to seeing this work continue into the future.
“During Conference Zero, experts shared insights on Arctic security, disinformation threats and recent security operations. These discussions are an important step in shaping the future of Arctic defence policy. I want to thank CanNor for its support, as well as all the speakers, participants and organizers who contributed to this event. I look forward to advancing these conversations and ensuring northern leadership in Arctic security.”
