“Today marks a significant day for the Filipino community here in the Yukon. It was 127 years ago – in 1898 – when the Philippines declared their independence after three centuries of Spanish colonial rule. We mark this historic occasion today by celebrating the hard work, courage and the resilience of the Filipino people and national heroes to achieve freedom and sovereignty.
“The Yukon is home to a vibrant Filipino community whose lasting contributions to education, health care, business, the arts and beyond have profoundly enriched the social, cultural and economic fabric of our territory.
“While today is a joyous day, we also pause to remember the recent Lapu-Lapu Day Festival tragedy in Vancouver and support the Filipino community here in the Yukon, across Canada and around the world.
“We’re all proud of where we come from – whether we were born and raised here in the Yukon, moved from elsewhere in Canada or immigrated from abroad. I encourage everyone to learn more about the history of Filipino people in the Yukon and commemorate this special occasion.
“Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!”
