Statement from Premier Pillai on World Press Freedom Day

Premier Ranj Pillai has issued the following statement:

“Today is World Press Freedom Day, a time to acknowledge the important work of journalists and members of the media in the Yukon, across Canada, and around the world.

“In the Yukon, we are fortunate to have dedicated reporters who work hard to keep us informed about local issues and events, foster public debate, hold institutions to account and amplify diverse voices.

“This year’s theme, Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media, highlights how technology continues to reshape society’s relationship to the truth. As artificial intelligence becomes more widely used, journalism is more important than ever to verify facts, challenge misinformation and provide the human judgment that computer-generated content lacks.

“On World Press Freedom Day, we pause to thank journalists for their essential role in protecting truth, strengthening democracy, and ensuring that the public remains informed in a rapidly changing world.”
