Statement from Premier Sandy Silver on the United States Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade

Premier Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:

“I am deeply disappointed in today’s decision from the United States Supreme Court to overturn protections for safe and legal abortions. Nobody should tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body and this decision strengthens our resolve here in the Yukon to ensure that a woman’s right to choose will continue to be defended and protected.

“Reproductive health care is essential. Without government protection of these fundamental rights, procedures like abortion become dangerous, inaccessible and expensive.  Limiting access to abortion puts the health, freedom, and social and economic futures of women and girls at risk.

“In an effort to ensure Yukoners have access to abortion services in the Yukon, our government introduced universal coverage of Mifegymiso, the medication used for early, non-surgical medical abortions. Reproductive health care, including abortion, is offered in the territory to help ensure Yukoners are able to access the best possible care for their sexual and reproductive health.

“My thoughts are with American women across the United States and the Yukon stands with you and the right to choose.”
