Statement from Premier Silver on keynote address to the Arctic Security Working Group

Premier Sandy Silver has issued the following statement:

“Today I delivered a keynote address to the Arctic Security Working Group. The theme of this year’s meeting is Energy Security: Northern Considerations and Priorities. Discussing energy security provided an opportunity to share our northern realities and the Yukon’s priorities, including our work to increase renewable energy capacity in the territory and our ongoing commitment to reconciliation with Yukon First Nations.

“In my keynote address I discussed the importance of collaboration in Canada’s Arctic and stressed the need for Canadian leaders to hear the views of territorial, Indigenous and local governments to ensure that any decisions made about the North are made together with northerners.

“Northern communities are strengthened through initiatives that promote resiliency and sustainability. Recent world events have underscored the need to strengthen our security in areas such as energy, climate and housing. Canada’s Arctic and Northern Policy Framework can be used as a mechanism to advance the national dialogue and to guide federal investments toward the vision of a healthy, vibrant and sustainable Arctic.

“I look forward to continuing to work with my territorial and federal partners to help strengthen the security of the Canadian Arctic for the benefit of all Canadians.”
