Joint news release with the State of Alaska
The governments of Yukon and Alaska are working together to secure funding to improve the Shakwak Project – the section of highway from Haines, Alaska, to Beaver Creek, Yukon. The State of Alaska and the Government of Yukon collaborated on a $25 million (USD) submission to the new United States Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) fund.
Yukon’s Highway and Public Works Minister Richard Mostyn wrote to Alaska Governor Bill Walker in June 2018 about the need to secure money to finish upgrading the Shakwak Project. Work to stabilize and upgrade the road into Alaska is estimated to cost $340 million (CAD).
In July, the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities Commissioner Marc Luiken and Minister Mostyn collaborated on the application for the BUILD grant, requesting the maximum available amount of $25 million (USD).
Yukon has a long-standing and mutually beneficial relationship with Alaska. Hundreds of thousands of American visitors drive through the territory to and from Alaska each year, supporting the creation of jobs and making a significant contribution to Yukon’s economy.
A decision on the application is expected in December 2018.
The Shakwak Highway is a major transportation artery for all Yukoners and fosters close relations with our Alaskan neighbours. I am proud to be collaborating with the Alaskan government to secure the necessary funding to upgrade this important piece of our shared infrastructure.

Since 1977, road improvements on the Shakwak Project have been funded through the US – Canada Shakwak Agreement. The funds provided through this agreement will be exhausted this year.
The BUILD funding would support maintenance and reconstruction activities from 2019–20 through 2024–25.
The Government of Yukon’s contribution would total an additional CAD $5.9 million over six years.
Maintenance and reconstruction work would take place from km 1,680 to km 1,902.5 of the Alaska Highway.
