The Government of Yukon is taking steps to ensure electoral boundaries respond to shifting populations and demographics in the territory, particularly in Whistle Bend in Whitehorse.
Today, amendments to the Elections Act received assent, enabling the establishment of an Electoral District Boundaries Commission. This commission will engage with Yukoners and produce a report outlining proposed changes to electoral areas for the upcoming election. The Yukon Legislative Assembly will review these proposed changes.
An essential technical amendment in the Elections Act has also received assent. The change specifies that the updated boundaries will be used six months after the Bill is approved, rather than after the assembly's dissolution. This will allow updated electoral boundaries to be used in upcoming elections.
Our government is committed to ensuring electoral boundaries respond to shifting populations and demographics in the territory. Creating an Electoral District Boundaries Commission is an important step towards accomplishing this. This Bill ensures we have the legislation in place to protect the principle that Yukon citizens have fair and effective representation in the Yukon Legislative Assembly.
