Current advisories

911 and telecommunications outage (last updated Sunday May 12, 2024, 12 pm)

  • Telecommunications services, including 911, are mostly restored in the Yukon and northern B.C. Long distance is restored across the North. Services in the Mackenzie Valley and Beaufort Delta regions of the NWT are working; however, they are congested. Northwestel is working today on repairing more fibre damage in the NWT.
  • Some people in the Yukon may still be having trouble with cell, landline or internet. With wildfires ongoing in B.C. and the NWT, connectivity issues may continue over the next few days. Stay alert and prepared for emergencies including loss of telecommunications. Report any service issues to Northwestel.
  • If you need emergency help, always try calling 911 first. If you cannot reach 911 at any time:
    • In communities outside Whitehorse, call emergency health care by using the phone on the outside of the community health centre or at the local RCMP detachment.
  • In Whitehorse, during an emergency, ambulances will be stationed at the following locations depending on availability:
    • Canada Games Centre
    • Qwanlin Mall Independent
    • Porter Creek gas station (Wann Road and Alaska Highway)
    • Rest stop at the top of South Access/Robert Service Way
    • Whistle Bend roundabout (Whistle Bend Way and Casca Boulevard)
    • Riverdale Super A
  • You can also get help at the RCMP detachment (4th Avenue), and both Whitehorse fire halls (105 Black Street, and at the top of Two Mile Hill).

Thank you and further updates

  • Another update will be shared at 12 pm Monday. For the latest emergency information, always check this webpage and Yukon Protective Services Facebook.

Travel advisories (last updated Sunday May 12, 12 pm)

Always check Yukon511 before travelling. For highways within British Columbia, please check DriveBC before travelling.

  • The Alaska Highway (BC Highway 97) south of Toad River, B.C. and B.C. Highway 77 are closed this time due to an active and extreme wildfire in the Fort Nelson area.  There is no current ETA on reopening and there are multiple road blocks in place with limited space for turnaround.
  • Travellers who have already entered B.C. on Highway 97 are urged to hold in place at a location with services, with Toad River Lodge being the furthest south with fuel, lodging and food at this current time, but we ask that traffic stage at stops further north to not overwhelm the capacity of our remote highway service providers.  Alternate routes must be considered at this time for any travellers with southern destinations beyond Fort Nelson.
