Upgrading Yukon's 911 service

Next generation 911

The federal government has mandated an upgrade of existing analog 911 services to Next Generation 911 (NG911) by 2025. This process will add accurate location information to dispatch services, which in turn will enhance emergency responses.

In spring 2021, a group of 40 participants teamed up with GIS and public safety experts from Esri Canada to conduct an NG911 readiness assessment. Participants included:

  • Yukon’s telecom provider;
  • Yukon's dispatch provider, and
  • a variety of government staff, including people from:
    • Information and Communications Technology and GIS;
    • emergency management;
    • fire;
    • community services;
    • land management; and
    • transportation departments.

The assessment on Yukon’s civic addressing spotlighted the need for a Yukon-wide civic addressing program. Better addressing will:

  • help define the call centre boundaries; and
  • map those boundaries so there is greater clarity on responsibilities throughout the territory.

The project will improve the integration of GIS data between the multiple sources in the territory.
