Treaties the Yukon has responsibilities under
The Yukon has responsibilities under 8 international human rights treaties:
- Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment
- Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women
- Convention on the Rights of the Child
- Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
- International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
- International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
- International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination
- Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence against Women (the Convention of Belém do Pará)
These treaties are developed by international bodies like the United Nations (UN). When the Government of Canada, with the support of provincial and territorial governments, agrees to participate in an international treaty, all provincial and territorial governments have implementation obligations to meet treaty requirements.
Our responsibilities include:
- upholding international treaties for which Canada is party to;
- following federal laws made or amended to align with treaties;
- aligning our laws and their regulations with treaties;
- supporting monitoring and oversight mechanisms; and
- providing territorial information to Canada about treaty implementation for reporting purposes.
How reporting works for international treaties
Each treaty has a reporting cycle. During each cycle:
- the Government of Canada requests information from provincial and territorial governments, including the Government of Yukon;
- the Government of Yukon gathers information from its departments’ relevant programs, services, and legislation to support reporting;
- the Government of Yukon submits information to Canada;
- Canada submits 1 national report highlighting what our country has done to implement each treaty;
- a specialized committee of human rights experts reviews Canada’s report and provides feedback on what we’re doing well or need to work on; and
- the Government of Canada, provinces and territories then have several years to respond to recommendations should they wish to before the next report is due.
