Government of Yukon seeking input to inform review of Mayo wildfire evacuation

The Government of Yukon is seeking input for the After Action Review of the Mayo wildfire evacuation last summer. The Village of Mayo was under an Evacuation Order due to threat from the Talbot Creek wildfire in August 2023.

The Government of Yukon has contracted Loomex to conduct the After Action Review. The review is intended to capture feedback from emergency responders, governments and residents affected by the wildfire and evacuation. The review will also provide recommendations to help improve preparedness, response and recovery processes for future incidents.

Anyone impacted by the wildfire and evacuation in Mayo is encouraged to provide feedback to the contractor, Loomex, to inform the After Action Review. Feedback is being gathered in several ways, including an in-person public meeting and an online survey that is available until March 1, 2024. The survey will also be available in hard copy at the public meeting.

Affected residents are also invited to provide feedback at a public meeting:

  • What: After Action Review public meeting
  • When: Monday, February 19, 6 pm to 8 pm
  • Where: Village of Mayo Community Hall, 310 6th Avenue, Mayo, Yukon

As we look ahead to summer 2024, the Government of Yukon continues supporting the work of Nacho Nyak Dun and the Village of Mayo on emergency planning for the area.

Learning from the Mayo evacuation helps with how we respond to future events. It is a crucial part of the emergency-response cycle, and we are eager to hear from affected individuals, governments and emergency responders. This feedback will assist The Government of Yukon with future operations and the important work of keeping Yukoners safe.
