Minister Responsible for Women and Gender Equity Directorate Jeanie McLean has issued the following statement:

“I was honoured to represent the Government of Yukon at the 41st annual meeting of the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women, held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on the Traditional Territory of the Mi’kmaw people. The closure of the Minto mine has affected Yukoners and others across the country. The Government of Yukon and the Yukon Employment Standards Office want to help ensure that former Minto employees are aware of the supports available to them.

“Many Yukoners, especially in the communities, are concerned about staffing shortages and service reductions at their local health care facilities, especially in remote and rural communities. On behalf of the Government of Yukon, I want to assure you that we hear your concerns, appreciate your patience and are working hard to address the situation.

A court decision on Monday, July 24 addressed unpaid royalties for Selkirk First Nations (SFN) and confirmed the Government of Yukon may advance planning for reclamation and closure of Minto mine site.

It also appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers as receiver for Minto Metals Corporation. As appointed receiver, PricewaterhouseCoopers will manage the Minto Metal Corporation business and property in the best interest of creditors. PricewaterhouseCoopers can seek sale of the mine and assets, if possible, in its entirety to a single purchaser.
