The Parks General Regulation is a new regulation under the Parks and Land Certainty Act that governs and regulates all:
- activities;
- uses;
- developments; and
- occupations within Yukon territorial parks.
The Parks General Regulation applies to all 56 designated territorial parks which include:
- recreation parks (i.e., campgrounds, recreation site and day use areas);
- natural environment parks;
- wilderness preserves; and
- ecological reserves.
Yukon parks management
Regulations under the Parks and Land Certainty Act have not had significant updates since 1984. As the number of visitors and parks has increased, the regulations became outdated.
The new Parks General Regulation ensures that we:
- represent all aspects of park management;
- support sustainable recreation; and
- protect natural and cultural values.
Modernizing the Parks General Regulation
In 2020, the Government of Yukon released the Yukon Parks Strategy. The strategy included modernizing regulations under the Parks and Land Certainty Act as one of the 10 priorities.
Feedback gathered during the public engagement shaped the Parks General Regulation. Key themes from the engagement included:
- the need for balance between park access and conservation;
- clearer rules;
- better signage; and
- increased Indigenous involvement in park management.

Changes to how we manage and protect Yukon Parks
The Parks General Regulation improves how we manage and protect Yukon parks. The Regulation:
- applies to all territorial parks, not just campgrounds;
- introduces tools to manage parks activities, including pet control measures;
- provides clearer permitting rules for specific group sizes and park activities;
- establishes zoning in some park areas to protect environmental and cultural values while supporting recreation; and
- helps park officers issue permits and enforce park rules in the field.
