Updates to the First Nations map service

Par Kate.Powell

The following changes have now been completed on the GeoYukon First Nations map service.

New and updated layers

The changes include the addition of new layers representing First Nation Settlement Lands, Interim Protected Areas, and internal surveyed parcels within First Nation Settlement Lands.

Updates have been made to improve accuracy and clarity. All First Nation Settlement Lands (surveyed and unsurveyed) are now combined into a single layer, and Interim Protected Land parcels have been separated.

Layers scheduled for retirement

The following layers have been marked as Legacy in both GeoYukon and ArcGIS Online and are scheduled to be retired on October 30, 2026.

About the new layers

First Nation Settlement Land

This layer contains all First Nations Settlement Lands and Tetlit Gwich'in Yukon Lands (settlement-like) for First Nations that have ratified their agreements.

Some parcels are still being finalized and boundaries may be revised. A new attribute field, "Land Claim Status", identifies parcels as "Incomplete" or "Complete". There may be parcels with the same land claim selection ID.

Interim Protected Land

This layer contains all Interim Protected Lands in the Yukon. These are lands withdrawn from disposal by Orders in Council (OIC) under the Lands Act and Territorial Lands (Yukon) Act for First Nations that have not finalized land claims (Liard First Nation and White River First Nation).

All parcels in this layer are unsurveyed.

These changes correct previous misrepresentation between First Nation Settlement Lands and Interim Protected Lands and ensure land protection status is consistently and accurately depicted.

First Nation Settlement Lands - Internal Parcels

This layer contains surveyed parcels located within First Nation Settlement Lands.
