Statement from Minister Istchenko on his visit to the Yukon’s North Slope

Minister of Environment Wade Istchenko has issued the following statement:

“I am grateful to have had the opportunity to visit Tapqaq – Shingle Point – on the Yukon’s North Slope this past July, to attend the Wildlife Management Advisory Council (North Slope) summer meetings. It was a privilege to meet the Inuvialuit in this remarkable region and hear their perspectives of the land and how they envision the future of the area.

"I was honoured to meet and stay with the Aullaviat/Anguniarvik Land Guardians on Tapqaq and see first-hand their deep knowledge of being, living and caring for the land in this area. I thank them for their generosity, hospitality and guidance throughout my stay.

"I left Tapqaq with a greater appreciation for how the Yukon’s North Slope could play a critical role in advancing Arctic sovereignty and security. During my visit, I joined the Aullaviat/Anguniarvik Land Guardians, Yukon Conservation Officer Services, a representative of the Canadian Armed Forces and Inuvialuit families on a joint marine patrol. The patrol aimed to identify safe havens along the coast, transit routes, possible camp locations and key coastal areas in a changing Arctic landscape. It was a powerful example of how local knowledge and strong partnerships help support a safe, secure and resilient Arctic.

"Time on the land is fundamental to life in the Yukon. It shapes our understanding of communities and landscape and strengthens relationships through shared experiences. I greatly appreciated the opportunity to learn from the Aullaviat/Anguniarvik Land Guardians, Inuvialuit families, the Wildlife Management Advisory Council (North Slope), Yukon Conservation Officer Services and Yukon Parks Branch. This government looks forward to continuing our work together to be responsible stewards of the land, including the Yukon’s North Slope and the Yukon’s presence in the Arctic."
