The Government of Yukon, in collaboration with the Court of Appeal of Yukon, has launched a public engagement to gather feedback from the public, court users and the legal community. The engagement is available at Yukon.ca/engagements, and the input received will inform the modernization of the Yukon Court of Appeal Act and updates to the Court of Appeal of Yukon’s Rules of Court.
The Yukon’s Court of Appeal Act was originally passed in 1971 and incorporated sections of British Columbia’s Court of Appeal Act. In July 2022, British Columbia amended its Court of Appeal Act and the Rules of Court. As the Yukon and B.C. laws work so closely together, the territory’s law now needs to be updated while keeping practices and procedures that are unique to the Yukon.
The Court of Appeal is the highest court in the territory and has the power to hear appeals of decisions made by the Territorial Court and the Supreme Court of Yukon.
The public engagement is open until Monday, October 19, 2026.
I am pleased to share our initial work to modernize the law governing the Court of Appeal of Yukon, including this opportunity for the public, court users and the legal community to share their input. I look forward to working with the courts to advance changes that will further support effective administration of justice in the Yukon.
The Court looks forward to the opportunity to modernize the procedures and practices of the Court of Appeal of Yukon, including making the new Yukon legislation more accessible to court users. We welcome the valuable input of the public and court users as part of this important process.
