Yukon government expands medical, nursing and health education bursaries

More Yukon students who are pursuing careers in medicine, nursing and other health professions will be able to receive financial support this year as the Government of Yukon puts its Budget 2026 investment in medical, nursing and health education bursaries into action.

Budget 2026 allocated an additional $200,000 to strengthen the bursary program, bringing total program funding to $289,000. As a result, the Government of Yukon is increasing the target number of yearly bursary awards by more than 50 per cent.

Bursaries provide financial support for applicants based on programs of study. Available funding includes:

  • up to $15,000 for medical students and residents;
  • up to $7,500 for nursing students;
  • up to $7,500 for students pursuing eligible health and social services degree or master’s programs; and
  • up to $3,000 for students pursuing eligible certificate or diploma programs.

Recipients must commit to working in the Yukon after completing their studies.

Applications for the 2026–27 academic year are being accepted through the Government of Yukon’s Student Financial Assistance Portal – https://student-aid.service.yukon.ca/sign-in, until August 31, 2026. The centralized portal allows students to submit their documentation, track their application status and receive funding decisions through one system.

Students can get more information about eligibility, approved programs and how to apply at https://yukon.ca/yukon-health-care-and-social-services-bursary.

The total number of health bursaries expected to be awarded is increasing by more than 50 per cent, from 14 to 22 this year. The bursary allocations are:

  • six bursaries for medical students;
  • eight bursaries for nursing students; and
  • eight bursaries for students pursuing eligible health professions.

We are helping Yukon students train for Yukon health careers. By expanding the number of bursaries and increasing financial support, we are helping more Yukoners pursue health education.

Minister of Health and Social Services Brad Cathers
