This is a joint news release between the Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse.
The Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse have started engaging with the Yukon’s building industry to build a made-in-Yukon approach to the 2025 National Building Code.
This engagement responds to requests from the building industry and municipalities to be better informed and engaged before a new National Building Code is adopted. It also allows stakeholders and partners to provide their input on possible exemptions that make sense in the Yukon.
Participants are invited to learn more about the 2025 National Building Code, share their ideas on how to adapt the code for the Yukon and help us choose an energy tier that determines the levels of energy efficiency houses and small buildings should be built to. Participants can also provide feedback on how to support the industry in managing changes that come with new editions of the code.
I encourage all stakeholders, industry members and local governments to help us develop a made-in-Yukon approach to the National Building Code. Feedback from this engagement will help guide decisions as we balance public safety, minimize impacts on industry and ensure high-quality housing meets the needs of Yukon communities for generations to come.
As one of the fastest growing cities in Canada, Whitehorse is undergoing a significant amount of development. By engaging with builders, developers and contractors, we can share information about the implementation of the 2025 National Building Code and identify opportunities to support future development that meets the needs of our community.

The Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse are reaching out directly to industry groups, municipalities and First Nations governments to invite people to participate.

A full-day information and engagement session for the building industry on the 2025 National Building Code will take place on October 8, 2026.

Virtual lunch-and-learn sessions for both builders and homeowners will take place in the coming weeks. Details will be posted on the engagement webpage once finalized.

A technical expert will lead the meetings to guide participants through a detailed presentation on the changes to the 2025 National Building Code.

Input will be used to inform possible regulatory amendments to the Building Standards Act and improve operations and services for both the City of Whitehorse’s and the Government of Yukon’s building safety and permitting areas.
