Influenza activity has started earlier than usual.
Laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A have been identified in the Yukon starting in mid-August. Several influenza-related hospitalizations and one outbreak have already been reported.
The Yukon typically sees an increase in influenza cases beginning in November and it is important for Yukoners to be aware of the early influenza activity.
Symptoms and what to watch for
Influenza is a respiratory illness that can cause a range of symptoms, including:
- a fever or chills;
- a cough;
- a sore throat;
- a runny or stuffy nose;
- muscle or body aches;
- a headache; and
- fatigue.
How to reduce the spread
Yukoners are encouraged to take steps to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses.
- Wash or sanitize hands.
- Cover coughs and sneezes.
- Stay home when sick.
- Consider wearing a mask if respiratory symptoms are present or visiting higher-risk individuals.
- Avoid close contact with others when ill.
People at higher risk of severe influenza illness, including older adults, young children, pregnant individuals and those with certain underlying health conditions, should take extra precautions.
Where to access care and testing
Yukoners should seek health care if they:
- are having difficulty breathing;
- are experiencing severe symptoms; or
- are experiencing symptoms and are at higher risk of complications from influenza.
Individuals who have the above symptoms should contact their primary health care provider, local health centre or walk-in clinic for assessment and guidance. As multiple respiratory viruses circulate at this time, health care providers will use clinical assessments and testing, where appropriate, to determine the cause of illness.
If symptoms are severe or urgent care is required, Yukoners should go to Whitehorse General Hospital or the nearest health centre or community hospital.
Fall immunization campaign
The Yukon’s fall immunization campaign is expected to begin in October. Information about vaccine availability and appointment options will be shared in the coming weeks. Yukoners are encouraged to receive seasonal influenza vaccination when eligible.
