Doctors and nurse practitioners help reduce patient waitlist by 60 per cent

The Yukon government is reporting more success reducing the number of Yukoners on the Find a Primary Care Provider waitlist.
In September, the number of Yukoners on the list was 1,827, down from 4,606 in January 2026, which represents a 60 per cent reduction.

The decrease is a result of Yukoners being connected with new family doctors and nurse practitioners, family doctors matching with patients and Insured Health Services contacting people on the waitlist to determine if they still need a primary care provider.

Thirty-five family doctors are participating in the new Longitudinal Family Medicine Program and each is required to accept at least 10 patients from the list each year.

Alliance Health Clinic is also building its capacity to attach patients from the list through the recruitment of nurse practitioners. As nurse practitioners join the clinic, it will be able to connect more patients with access to primary care.

The Find a Primary Care Provider list helps connect eligible residents with health care providers.

The effort to reduce the Find a Primary Care Provider list is part of the government’s mandate commitment to improve timely access to frontline health care services for Yukoners.

Information about the program, online registration, participating doctors and clinics is available on Yukon.ca/find-primary-care-provider.

The joint efforts of the Yukon government, Yukon doctors, nurse practitioners and Yukon Hospitals have connected more people with family doctors and nurse practitioners. The 60 per cent drop in the Find a Primary Care Provider list is resulting in Yukoners who have been on the waitlist for years finally having a primary care provider.

Minister of Health and Social Services Brad Cathers

En bref
  • Improving access to primary care and helping Yukoners connect with a regular provider is a priority for the Government of Yukon.

  • To register, residents must be 16 or older, have a valid Yukon Health Care Insurance Plan, live in the Whitehorse area and not have a family doctor or nurse practitioner.

  • The Whitehorse area extends along the South Klondike Highway to Annie Lake Road, the North Klondike Highway to Braeburn, the North Alaska Highway to Champagne Landing and the South Alaska Highway to Jake’s Corner.

  • When families and dependents residing at the same address register together under one application, Insured Health Services works to match the entire household to the same provider or clinic.

  • Eligible Yukoners can register on the find a primary care provider list online or submit paper forms in person at Insured Health Services, 4th Floor, 204 Lambert Street, Whitehorse.
