Government of Yukon doubles road resurfacing work in 2026 construction season

Yukon government maintenance crews resurfaced close to 152 kilometres of road with bituminous surface treatment (BST) in 2026, nearly double the amount completed in 2025.

Of the 152 kilometres, more than 143 kilometres of resurfacing was performed on major highways across the territory, with significant improvements along the North Klondike Highway, Alaska Highway, South Klondike Highway and Robert Campbell Highway. An additional nine kilometres of community streets were resurfaced in Watson Lake, Mayo and Carmacks.

Also referred to as chipseal, BST helps extend the life of roads, improve driving conditions and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Ensuring transportation infrastructure is adequately maintained is a key mandate commitment of the Yukon government.

Looking ahead to 2027, the Government of Yukon is preparing for the next construction season by securing road maintenance materials early and planning for additional seasonal staff to maximize work during the Yukon’s short construction season.

With such a short construction season in the Yukon, making the most of every opportunity to improve our roads is important. Resurfacing nearly 152 kilometres this year is a significant accomplishment and reflects the hard work of our highway maintenance crews. I thank them for their dedication to keeping our roads in good condition and supporting safe, reliable travel across the territory.

Minister of Highways and Public Works Linda Benoit
