Apply for your child's first birth certificate

Use this process to get your child's first birth certificate if they were born in the Yukon.

A birth certificate is an official document that proves a person's identity and shows when and where they were born. You need a birth certificate for many services and applications, including:

• a passport;
• a Social Insurance Number; and
• school registration.

If your child was born outside the Yukon, contact the province or territory where the birth was registered to get a birth certificate.

Who can apply

Anyone with knowledge of the person named on the certificate can apply.

You demonstrate knowledge by providing the required information on the application form.

Apply for a birth certificate

1. Fill out an application for certificate, certified copy or search.
2. Submit your completed application and payment:
   • by mail; or
   • in person.

Fees

A birth certificate costs $10.

We accept:

• cash;
• debit;
• money order;
• Visa;
• Mastercard; and
• American Express.

Processing time

Applications can take up to 10 business days to process.

After you apply

If you choose to pick up your birth certificate, the Office of the Registrar of Vital Statistics will call you when it’s ready.

If you choose registered mail, your birth certificate will be mailed to you.
