Replace a birth certificate

Use this process to replace a birth certificate.

A birth certificate is an official document that shows:

• your name;
• when you were born; and
• where you were born.

Some birth certificates also include information about your parents.

You may need a birth certificate to:

• apply for a passport;
• get a Social Insurance Number; or
• register for school.

The Office of the Registrar of Vital Statistics can only issue birth certificates for people born in the Yukon.

If you were born in another province or territory, contact the vital statistics office where the birth was registered.

Who can apply

Anyone who has knowledge of the person named on the certificate can apply for a birth certificate.

You demonstrate knowledge by providing the required information on the application form.

Apply for a replacement birth certificate

1. Fill out an application for certificate, certified copy or search.
2. Submit your completed application and payment:
   • by mail; or
   • in person.

Fees

A birth certificate costs $10.

We accept:

• cash;
• debit;
• money order;
• Visa;
• Mastercard; and
• American Express.

If no record is found, the $10 fee is retained to cover administrative costs.

Processing time

Applications can take up to 10 business days to process.

After you apply

If you choose to pick up your birth certificate, the Office of the Registrar of Vital Statistics will call you when it’s ready.

If you choose registered mail, your birth certificate will be mailed to you.
