Clean Energy Act tabled in the Legislative Assembly

Today, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources John Streicker tabled Bill No. 17, the Clean Energy Act (2022) in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. 

The Clean Energy Act would legislate the Yukon’s targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensure long-term climate change accountability through public reporting. 

This proposed legislation would also enable the Government of Yukon to deliver on several key climate actions found in Our Clean Future: a Yukon strategy for climate change, energy and a green economy.

Flu shots available to Yukoners in October

On October 24, flu shots will be offered to high-risk Yukoners, seniors and Elders over the age of 65. Appointments for the general public aged six months and older will start the week of October 31. 

High-risk Yukoners include people who are pregnant, have a chronic medical condition, infants and children age six to 59 months, residents of long-term care, health care providers, household contacts of those at high-risk, child care workers and workers that provide essential community services.

Active living celebrated at annual recreation gathering

Recreation leaders from across the Yukon celebrated excellence in community recreation and active living at the territory’s annual recreation gathering held in Dawson City from October 4 to October 6.

First Supplementary Estimates highlight inflation relief for Yukoners and funding for fire and flood mitigation

Today, Premier and Finance Minister Sandy Silver tabled the 2022–23 First Supplementary Estimates in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. It includes increases of $26.2 million in operations and maintenance and no changes in capital funding.

Spending increases are largely due to an unprecedented 2022 fire season as well as mitigation and clean-up work required in response to extensive flooding throughout the territory. Funding associated with these items make up approximately $20.2 million of total new spending.

Agreement reached between the Government of Yukon and the Yukon Medical Association

The Government of Yukon and the Yukon Medical Association have reached a new three-year agreement for services covering the period from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2025.

The agreement is expected to increase equity and access to health services, promote a culture of continuous improvement and support the development of primary care teams. Highlights include:

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on track to become statutory day in the Yukon

Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn has announced the Yukon plans to mark September 30, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, as a statutory day starting in 2023 to commemorate the tragic legacy of residential schools in Canada. The Government of Yukon will table amendments to the Employment Standards Act in the spring of 2023.

Last month the Government of Yukon published a What We Heard report following a public engagement on creating a new statutory day to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Housing Summit brings together community partners to find solutions to address homelessness and build more homes in the Yukon

On October 4, the Government of Yukon hosted the Yukon – Together for Housing Summit 2022, which brought together housing partners across the territory to advance work to address the Office of the Auditor General’s (OAG) report on housing and identify ways to end homelessness in the Yukon. The summit raised awareness on the ongoing challenges of homelessness and core housing, new and innovative housing developments and ways the Yukon government can strengthen partnerships across the sector.

Safer Schools Action Plan fall update

The Government of Yukon has completed 13 of the 23 commitments in the Safer Schools Action Plan, representing significant progress to address policy gaps and enhance safety and oversight across all Yukon schools and government departments. All 23 commitments in the plan are on track to be completed by spring 2023.
