Even a small visit can make a big difference.

As a volunteer, you can:

  • visit with residents;
  • play games;
  • support activities; or
  • simply spend time together.

How you can help

Volunteer roles vary by location and may include the following:

  • friendly visitor;
  • program support;
  • store support;
  • shopper;
  • special events support;
  • pet visits; and
  • community outings.

We match volunteers with roles that fit their interests, skills and availability.

Who we’re looking for

We welcome volunteers who:

  • are friendly, respectful and dependable;
  • enjoy spending time with people;
  • can commit to a regular schedule; and
  • are comfortable working with staff in a health care setting.

Age requirements

  • Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.
  • Volunteers under 18 must have written consent from a parent or guardian.
  • Volunteers under 18 must be supervised by a registered adult volunteer.

What you need to get started

Before you begin, you must:

  • complete a volunteer application form;
  • provide 2 character and professional references;
  • complete a criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening;
  • complete a tuberculosis screening; and
  • attend an interview, orientation and training.

Your time commitment

To support residents, we ask volunteers to:

  • commit to 1 to 3 hours per week;
  • commit for at least 6 months, ideally up to 1 year; and
  • attend regularly and give advance notice for schedule changes.

Volunteer opportunities are available across the Yukon, including:

  • Copper Ridge Place, Whitehorse;
  • Thomson Centre, Whitehorse;
  • Whistle Bend Place, Whitehorse; and
  • Alexander McDonald Lodge, Dawson City.

Opportunities vary by location.

How to apply

  1. Complete the volunteer application form.
  2. Provide 2 references and your criminal-record check.
  3. Attend an interview with the coordinator of volunteer services.
  4. Complete orientation and training.
