Who can apply

You can apply if you’re 16 years of age or older.

Complete the application form

Fill out the application to change sex on birth registration for applicants 16 years of age and over.

Gather your documents

You must provide:

• a copy of your valid government-issued photo identification; and
• all birth certificates or certified copies of birth registration previously issued to you or on your behalf.

If you do not have a birth certificate and were born in the Yukon, we can search our records to confirm your birth registration for a fee of $1.

Fees

The fee to change a birth registration is $10.

We accept:

• cash;
• debit;
• money order;
• Visa;
• Mastercard; and
• American Express.

A new birth certificate is not included in this fee. 

You can request a new birth certificate when you apply or submit a separate application later.

Who can apply

An adult must apply on your behalf.

The adult must:

• have custody of you; or
• have legal authority to make decisions for you.

If the adult has legal authority through a court order or agreement, they must include a copy with the application.

Consent requirements

All parents listed on your birth registration must consent to the change.

If you're 12 years of age or older, you must also consent.

A professional must confirm they have met with you and that, in their opinion, you want to change the sex on your birth registration.

The professional must be one of the following:

• a medical practitioner;
• a psychologist licensed or registered in the Yukon;
• a registered nurse;
• a nurse practitioner;
• a social worker with a Bachelor of Social Work degree or Master of Social Work degree;
• a lawyer;
• a chief or councillor of a Yukon First Nation;
• a teacher under the Teaching Profession Act; or
• a school counsellor employed at a Yukon school.

Gather your documents

You must provide:

• a copy of the adult applicant’s valid government-issued photo identification;
• any court order or agreement showing legal authority, if applicable; and
• all birth certificates or certified copies of your birth registration previously issued.

If you do not have a birth certificate and you were born in the Yukon, we can search our records to confirm your birth registration for a fee of $1.

Processing can take up to 4 weeks.

You’ll receive a letter confirming the change to your birth registration.

If you did not request a new birth certificate, you can apply for apply for one after the change is completed.
