This week Open Data Day is celebrated around the world. This past year was a big year for the Government of Yukon’s open government program, which shares government information and data through the open government portal.
Since this time last year, we’ve upgraded the portal to a new platform named CKAN, which is an open source data management software that is also used by the Government of Canada, BC, Ontario, and many Canadian cities for their open data programs.
The CKAN portal adds a number of benefits for data users and visitors to the site, as well as for Government of Yukon staff who are publishing publications and datasets. We’re really grateful to our colleagues across government who helped with the launch of the new portal – including Geomatics Yukon, the Corporate Information Management unit, the French Language Services Directorate, the Procurement Support Centre, and everyone who is part of the Data and Analytics Community of Practice.
Over the past year, teams across the Government of Yukon have published new data dashboards, data applications, and datasets.
New data dashboards and applications
- Tourism indicators dashboard (Tourism and Culture)
- Water conditions application (Geomatics Yukon and Environment)
- Water data explorer (Environment)
New datasets

You can see all of the Government of Yukon’s open data datasets by last modified date, or search for a specific dataset you’re looking for.
Open government portal metrics
In 2025 the open government portal had about 55,000 visitors and 128,000 pageviews, according to Matomo (our privacy-preserving web analytics tool).
There are now more than 400 open data datasets on the portal, and more than 2,400 open information publications. Together these include more than 19,200 documents, links, and other resources.
We’re continuing to make improvements to the portal. As part of our effort to work in the open, you can see this work in progress on GitHub and also see the API helper scripts we’ve used to manage the site.
We’d love your feedback on the portal as well as suggestions for new datasets and publications. You can use the feedback link in the footer of any page on the portal or email us at [email protected]. And, we’ll be part of Tech Yukon’s upcoming AI & Data series of events taking place in March. Hope to see you there!
