Get a motorcycle licence

  1. Find out if you’re eligible
  2. Provide proof of identification and residency
  3. Take the required tests
  4. Take a vision test
  5. After you pass the tests
  1. Find out if you’re eligible

    Learner

    • have a valid class 5 driver's licence;
    • have valid ID; and
    • have passed learner class 6 motorcycle/moped written exam.

    or

    Learner class requires a co-driver at all times.

    Novice

    • be at least 16 years old;
    • have valid ID;
    • have valid class 7 driver's licence through the Graduated Driver Licencing program (GDL) for a minimum of 6 months and have logged 30 hours of riding time with a valid co-driver; and
    • have passed a class 6 road test.

    Full licence

    or

    • have a valid full class 5 driver's licence;
    • have a valid ID;
    • have passed a class 6 written exam; and
    • have passed a class 6 road test.

     

  2. Provide proof of identification and residency

    Bring 1 document to prove your identity. Bring 2 documents to prove your Yukon residency.

    If you are under 18 a parent or legal guardian must go with you when you get your motorcycle licence.

     

  3. Take the required tests

    Knowledge test

    1. Study the motorcycle Learn to Ride Smart handbook.
    2. Go to the nearest Motor Vehicles office to take the test.
    3. Bring a copy of your class 5 driver's licence
    4. Pay the $20 test fee by cash, credit card or debit.
    5. We will let you know if you pass or fail immediately.
    6. If you fail your first test, you can retake the test the following day. A $20 fee is charged each time you take the test.

    Road test

    After you pass the knowledge test, we will give you the Tuning up for Riders guide book to study for your road test.

    Learning to ride

    While you are learning to ride, you will need to follow these 3 rules:

    • a co-driver has to have a valid motorcycle licence for at least 2 years;
    • your co-driver must follow you on a second motorcycle or in a car; and
    • you can't carry passengers.

    When you’re ready for the road test:

    1. Contact your nearest Motor Vehicles office to set up an appointment to take your road test.
    2. You will need to bring a licensed and insured motorcycle in acceptable mechanical condition.
    3. Pay the $20 test fee by cash, credit card or debit.
    4. We will let you know if you pass or fail immediately.
    5. If you fail your first test, you can retake the test the following day. A $20 fee is charged each time you take the test.

     

  4. Take a vision test
    1. We will test your vision at the Motor Vehicles office after your road test.
    2. If you don’t pass the vision test , you may need further vision testing by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. A Motor Vehicles client service agent will let you know what is needed from this visit.

    If you need to wear glasses or contact lenses when you drive, this should be noted on your class 5 licence and the restriction will be noted on your new motorcycle licence.

  5. After you pass the tests
    1. Once your pass the knowledge test, road test and vision test, we will issue you a temporary licence at the Motor Vehicles office. This temporary licence is valid for 90 days.
    2. The licence costs $50, which you can pay by cash, credit card or debit.
    3. We will mail you your new motorcycle license within 7 to 10 business days.
