The SCAN Unit

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) Unit supports community safety by investigating and disrupting certain illegal activities at properties in the Yukon. The SCAN Unit operates under the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act.

The SCAN Unit can investigate specific uses of property, including:

  • drug trafficking;
  • illegal sale of alcohol and cannabis;
  • illegal activities related to prostitution;
  • sexual abuse or exploitation of a child;
  • illegal possession of restricted and prohibited firearms, explosives and other weapons; and
  • organized crime.

Common signs of illegal activities happening at a property include:

  • people making short, suspicious visits to the property at all hours;
  • residents regularly meeting vehicles or people near the property for short periods;
  • occupants frequently leaving the property for repeated short trips; and
  • strange odours coming from the property.

Collaborate with us

The SCAN Unit collaborates with Yukon First Nations governments, non-profit organizations and other Government of Yukon service providers to support vulnerable people.

The SCAN Unit has signed protocols with 10 Yukon First Nations governments on the implementation of the SCAN Act in their communities and works closely with those First Nations in the event of a complaint in their community.

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act applies to First Nations Settlement Land. It does not apply to "Land Set Aside" by the federal government for the use and benefit of First Nations.
