Apply for funding for nursing studies

The Yukon nursing education bursary supports people who live or have lived in Yukon to attend a baccalaureate nursing education program.

Each year, 6 new students receive the bursary over 4 years of study:

  • two $5,000 bursaries to the 2-top-scored students for a maximum of $20,000; and
  • four bursaries will be awarded for $2,500 for a maximum of $10,000.

Who can apply for this funding?

  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents who live or have lived in Yukon.
  • Students enrolled in a Canadian nursing education program.
  • Students not eligible for student financial assistance from a jurisdiction outside Yukon.
  • Students who received the Yukon Grant.
  • Yukon students who are have already started their studies can apply for the remaining period in their education.

Application package

Your application is made up of a letter and several supporting documents. Your letter should include:

  • your intent to pursue your studies at a college or university;
  • whether your studies will be full-time or part-time;
  • your interest in and/or commitment to health care services through personal, employment, education and volunteer history; and
  • your intention/commitment to work in Yukon once you're finished your studies.

Required documentation:

  • proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency maintained throughout the period of the bursary;
  • proof of Yukon residency for 3 consecutive years of the past 5 years;
  • if applicable, a letter from the Government of Yukon indicating receipt of the Yukon Grant;
  • a letter of acceptance or proof of enrolment in a college or university nursing program that includes contact information;
  • a letter of conditional acceptance if final acceptance hasn’t been received;
  • a résumé of personal, employment, education and volunteer experience, with reference names and contact information; and
  • Yukon First Nations applicants must provide verification of their citizenship from their First Nation, or a copy of their Certificate of Indian Status.

Look at this example of a complete bursary application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The bursary committee will make a decision on the applications. The committee is made up of representatives from the Yukon Registered Nurses Association, Council of Yukon First Nations, Whitehorse General Hospital, Community Nursing and Continuing Care.

When will I hear about my application?

The bursary committee will make its decisions by September 30.

What happens if I receive a bursary?

Successful applicants will be notified in writing and will have to provide their Social Insurance Number (SIN) to receive the bursary.

What happens if I don't get a bursary?

You can reapply in any subsequent year.

We keep a priority list from the unsuccessful candidates who meet the bursary program requirements. If a successful candidate decides not to accept, or becomes ineligible for the bursary, we will offer the bursary to the next candidate. This priority list is only valid for the current academic year. Decisions by the bursary committee are final and there is no appeal process.
